Biting midges, also known as "noseeums" and sandflies are Dipterans in the Ceratopogonidae family. They belong to the genus Culicoides which contains over 1400 species. They are smaller but more robust than mosquitos and have similar habits. In some places they are actually a greater nuisance. Of course, this one never got a chance to bite anybody, since it died and its species most likely went extinct millions of years before humans appeared on the scene.

Refraction in amber stones often causes distortions and multiple images Biting midge with two bubbles A bark beetle

The image at the far left shows how refraction in amber can cause distortions and multiple images. Under the right lighting this specimen appears so clearly that you might think it is caught in buttered syrup or honey rather than amber. There is also a bark beetle in this piece but it has been compromised by pits and chips in surface of the amber. Still, it was a good deal considering this stone sold for less than $5!
