Daphnia are crustaceans in the order Cladocera. They hatch their eggs internally and thus release fully formed young which are independant upon emergence. Their nearly transparent skin makes them excellent for microscopic study and they can be studied live and, if you wish, released unharmed into open water. They seem to be remarkably tolerant of the experience!
