Mouse kidney

The kidneys filter the blood and in doing so, secrete urine which empties into the bladder. In people who rely on dialysis this function is lost so they have to watch their water intake, and also must avoid eating food high in potatssium. This condition is known as renal failure.
The mouse kidney functions pretty much the same way that a human kidney fuctions.

The image to the far left (produced by a flat bed scanner) shows that this is a secion of the entire kidney and reveals its distincitve shape. Objects and orgnaisms, such as colpoda, that are kidney shaped are said to be "reniform".
