Mouse ovary

The ovaries are the female gonads and they serve several functions. They produce the hormones estrogen, and progesterone, and , yes, also testosterone. Though testosterone is less abundant in females it does serve several functions.

Of course, the main function of ovaries is the production of ovums, also known less formally as eggs, the female reproductive cells.

Because mice tend to have large litters, the mouse ovaries produce multiple ovums at once, instead of the usual 1 or 2 as in humans. Of course, mice also mature earlier and also have shorter pregnancies. Mice ovaries get quite a workout!
