The term "protist" is being used in a very broad sense, to include any living organisms that are not plants, animals or fungi. In recognition of the fact that some are more fundamentally different from each other than plants are from animals I am not claiming that they constitute a kingdom, and fully acknowlege that they are not classified as such in 21st century cladistics.
